The preceding chapters make reference to any number of transportation and transit systems around the world, particularly those in North America. These are described in greater or lesser detail and illustrations of networks and vehicles are provided. Yet, reading about a system is not the same as actually seeing it and riding on it. Therefore, as a further guide for those who are truly interested in a specific mode and seek real familiarity with operational patterns and service quality, selected candidates are listed here that would be worthwhile to see preferably over an extended period, but a short visit would be instructive, too. The selection, limited arbitrarily to only three examples per mode, attempts to identify successful instances that provide a general overview of a specific mode or illustrate significant characteristics. These choices may not necessarily be endorsed by every transportation specialist, but some care has gone into making the list. Any investigator who wishes to go further or is concerned with specific elements or features should be able to receive guidance for visits from the various other examples mentioned in the chapters on the different modes. ^[1]
