   Thermal Spray Technology
   Your choices are...
Cold Spray       Cold spray processes use a stream of compressed gas flowing at ultrasonic velocities to propel and impact particles on a substrate. The impact causes plastic welding and cold micro welding of the particles to the surface. This process is akin to explosive welding on a micro scale.
Arc Spray (Electric Wire Arc)       Electric arc thermal spray processes use an electric arc heat source to melt the consumable coating material. An electric arc is struck between consumable wires that are fed continuously into the system. Compressed air or gas is applied behind the arc to atomize the melted consumable.
Flame Spray - Powder       Powder flame spray processes feed a consumable powder into a gun where a flame melts and atomizes the particles. The droplets are propelled toward a grit-blasted surface, where they strike and solidify to form a coating.
Flame Spray - Rod  / Rokide®       Rod flame spray processes feed a consumable ceramic or metal rod into a gun where a flame melts and atomizes the rod. The droplets are propelled toward a grit-blasted surface, where they strike and solidify to form a coating. Rokide® (Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Inc., Norton Company) is a proprietary rod flame spray process.
Flame Spray - Wire       Arc flame spray processes use an oxy-fuel combustion heat source to melt the consumable wire material and propel the droplet toward the grit-blasted surface. The droplets hit and solidify on the surface.
High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF)       High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray processes use a combusted gas flowing at hypersonic velocities to melt and propel particles to a substrate. Shock diamonds are usually visible in the exiting combustion stream. The combustion heat partially melts or softens the particles. The impact of the particles on the substrate completes the melting or bonding process by converting the kinetic energy into heat. HVOF systems typically use an axial feed. Axial feed systems inject the powder or coating media into the center of the stream, which can help eliminate the formation of unmelted particles in the coating.
Laser Cladding       Laser cladding directs a laser beam at a surface to form a molten pool. Powder or wire is then injected into the beam and melt pool. The process forms an integral metallurgical bond between the deposit and substrate with minimal and controlled heat input. The controlled heat input results in a clad layer with a smaller heat-affected zone than with other processes.
Plasma Spray       Plasma spray processes feed a consumable powder into a gun where plasma melts and atomizes the particles. The droplets are propelled toward a grit-blasted surface, where they strike and solidify to form a coating.
Plasma Transfer Arc (PTA)       Plasma transfer arc (PTA) is a welding process where an arc formed between internal electrodes in a gun generates plasma. Then the arc is transferred between the gun and the workpiece. Coating consumables or powders are fed into the weld pool, where an overlay of cladding, hardfacing, or hardface coating is formed.
RF / Induction Plasma        Radio frequency (RF) or induction plasma systems use an electrical field to induce a current in and then sustain a plasma heat source. Because electrodes for transferring power to the plasma are not used, a potential source of contamination is eliminated.
Shrouded Plasma Spray       Shrouded plasma or arc spray processes use of a gun with a surrounding nozzle to create a ring of inert gas around the stream of heated particles. This theoretically shields the spray from oxidation.
Vacuum Plasma Spray (VPS)       Vacuum plasma spray (VPS) is a plasma spraying process in a controlled-atmosphere chamber where the atmosphere is typically a vacuum or a low-pressure inert gas. The clean atmosphere in the chamber eliminates the possibility of air-based contamination from oxide or nitride inclusions.

   Your choices are...
Pump / Compressor       Pumps, compressors or pressure generators increase the pressure of the carrier fluid or propellant (typically air) or directly pressurize and move the paint or liquid coating. In air spray systems, air compressors are typically used to generate pressure.
Applicator / Gun       The gun or applicator directs the stream of paint droplets, coating powder, or adhesive through a nozzle or opening and at the appropriate region of the workpiece.
Booth - Acoustic Room       Rooms or booths are used for processing larger workpieces. Rooms contain the painting or coating equipment, workpiece, and operator. Booths usually contain internal lighting, ventilation and recovery systems. The operator may use the spray gun in offhand mode, or the gun may be reciprocator mounted. Workpieces often rest on open grid flooring that allows unmelted powder or overspray to drop through for recycling.  Acoustic rooms are specialized coating booths that designed to contain the sound generated by high pressure paint or thermal spray processes.
Booth - Hood / Cabinet       Thermal spray hoods, bench top open-faced booths, or coating cabinets are smaller vessels that contain the workpiece and/or the process. Some small spray cabinets consist of a chamber with glove ports, viewing window, and internal lighting.  The workpieces rest on an open grid that allows used powder or paint to drop through for recycling or disposal.
Booth - Tunnel / Continuous       Production tunnels consist of long walk-in enclosures that contain continuous processing lines and systems for cleaning, coating, drying, or curing and conveying or material handling.
Conveyor / Part Loader       Products include equipment or sub-systems for conveying, and loading or unloading parts into coating systems.
Dust Collection / Air Filtration System       Dust collection or filtration systems remove fine particle sizes of overspray or other coating waste that would otherwise become suspended in the air.
Feeder / Metering Unit       Feeders or metering units are used to control the rate at which the coating media is fed into the coating machine or gun. Depending upon the coating technology, the coating media may be in the form of powder, wire, or liquid paint.
Powder Hopper / Pressure Tank       Products include tanks or hoppers for the storage of coating powders or other coating media. The tank may or may not be pressurized.
Controller / Sensing System       Products include instruments, monitors, console, probes, detectors and other systems for monitoring coating parameters such as particle velocity, droplet size, flow rate, color, thickness, or coating quality.
Power Supply       Products include power supplies for coating processes such as plating power supplies (DC power supply or rectifier; pulsed or constant), charging power supplies for electrocoating or electrostatic coating, and plasma power supplies (RF generators or high-frequency power supplies).
Reciprocator / Robotic Arm       Robotic arms can uniformly clean or roughen a surface by scanning it in a controlled and repeatable fashion. Jet cutters that are mounted on crawlers or robotic arms are also useful in hazardous situations, such as in disarming bombs or mines.
Reclaimer / Separator       Reclaimers or separators remove undersized powder, media and coarse waste. Reclaimer material can sometimes be recirculated back into the coating process if the media's particle size and coating characteristics still meet specifications.
Spray Cup (Gun Hopper)       Spray cups are small vessels used to contain thermal spray powder or media. Spray cups are directly attached to the spray gun (above or below).
Specialty / Other       Other unlisted, specialized, or proprietary components.
