Description
Through Hole (Plug-in) Phototransistors are electronic components that detect light and convert it into an electrical signal. They are mounted by inserting their leads through holes in a printed circuit board (PCB) and soldering them in place. These phototransistors are designed to amplify variations in light, outputting a corresponding voltage.
Working Principle
Through Hole Phototransistors operate by using a semiconductor material that is sensitive to light. When photons strike the phototransistor, they generate a base current that is amplified by the transistor's gain, resulting in a significant current output. This amplification makes phototransistors more sensitive than photodiodes. They can operate in two modes: active mode, where the response is proportional to the light stimulus, and switch mode, which provides an on/off response to light exposure. This functionality is useful for applications requiring precise light detection and amplification.
Applications
Through Hole Phototransistors are used in a variety of applications due to their sensitivity and reliability. Specific examples include monitoring paper position and margin control in printers and copiers, detection in security systems, measuring speed and direction in encoders, remote meter reading for residential electric meters, counting coins or other items, remote controls for audio/visual equipment and appliances, shutter control for cameras, and detection for safety shields and other protection systems.
Advantages over other Phototransistors
Through Hole Phototransistors offer several advantages over other types of phototransistors. They provide a mechanically robust isolation barrier with high voltage ratings, such as 5 kV, while maintaining a compact, low-profile form factor. This makes them suitable for applications requiring high isolation and durability.
Limitations
One limitation of Through Hole Phototransistors is their response time, which is influenced by the capacitance of the collector-base junction and the value of the load resistance. This can affect their performance in applications requiring rapid response to light changes.

When considering Through Hole Phototransistors, it is important to evaluate factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, durability, accuracy, and replacement and maintenance costs. These components may have varying specifications, including collector current, collector dark current, peak wavelength, rise time, collector-emitter breakdown voltage, and power dissipation, which should be matched to the specific requirements of the intended application.
