Description
Phototransistors are semiconductor devices that detect light and convert it into an electrical signal. They are made primarily from silicon due to its reliability and low cost. When light falls onto the phototransistor, it activates the device, allowing current to flow through it. This current is then converted into a voltage, which can be measured and used in various applications.
Working Principle
A phototransistor consists of a collector, emitter, and base. The collector is positively biased with respect to the emitter, and the base-collector junction is reverse biased. The phototransistor remains inactive until light falls onto the base. When light hits the base, it generates hole-electron pairs, allowing current to flow across the collector or emitter. This current is then amplified by the gain of the transistor, resulting in current gains that can range from hundreds to several thousands. Phototransistors are significantly more sensitive than photodiodes and have a lower level of noise. They can also be configured as photodarlington transistors for even higher sensitivity in low light levels, although this configuration results in a slower response time.
Applications
Phototransistors are used in a variety of applications where light detection is crucial. Specific examples include:
- Monitoring paper position and margin control in printers and copiers
- Detection in security systems
- Measuring speed and direction in encoders
- Remote meter reading for residential electric meters
- Counting coins or other items
- Remote controls for audio/visual equipment and appliances
- Shutter control for cameras
- Detection for safety shields and other protection systems
Advantages over other Phototransistors
Phototransistors offer several advantages over other light-detecting devices like photodiodes. They are 50 to 100 times more sensitive than photodiodes and have a lower level of noise. Additionally, phototransistors can provide significant current gains, ranging from hundreds to several thousands, making them highly effective in low-light conditions. The use of photodarlington transistors can further enhance sensitivity, providing net gains greater than 100,000 amps, although at the cost of slower response times.
Limitations
Phototransistors do have some limitations. Their response time is slower compared to other light-detecting devices like photodiodes, especially when configured as photodarlington transistors. They are also highly dependent on the intensity of the applied light, which can limit their range of operation. Additionally, the dark current can increase with temperature, potentially turning the phototransistor on even in the absence of light if not properly managed.
Considerations
When considering the use of phototransistors, several factors should be taken into account:
- Initial Costs: Phototransistors are generally cost-effective, especially those made from silicon.
- Operating Expense: They have low operating expenses due to their low power consumption.
- Durability: Silicon-based phototransistors are reliable and durable.
- Accuracy: They offer high sensitivity and low noise, making them accurate for various applications.
- Replacement and Maintenance Costs: These costs are generally low, but it is essential to consider the potential impact of temperature on dark current, which may require additional circuit design considerations to mitigate.
