Description
Through Hole Technology (THT) Supercapacitors are electronic components designed to store and release energy quickly. They are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) by inserting their leads through holes in the board and soldering them in place on the opposite side. This method of mounting ensures a strong mechanical connection, making THT supercapacitors suitable for applications where durability and reliability are critical.
Working Principle
THT Supercapacitors operate by creating a very thin double layer of charge between two plates with a large surface area, which are made from porous materials soaked in an electrolyte. This configuration allows them to store a significant amount of charge compared to traditional capacitors. The ability to handle high-power pulses and provide rapid energy discharge makes them useful in applications requiring quick bursts of energy. Their longer cycle lifetimes and lower equivalent series resistance (ESR) contribute to their efficiency and reliability in energy storage systems.
Applications
THT Supercapacitors are used in various applications, including power bus voltage regulation in geostationary Earth orbit subsystems and hybrid energy storage systems where they are paired with lithium-ion batteries to extend the system's lifetime. They are also suitable for applications requiring pulse power handling and battery assistance.
Advantages over other Supercapacitors
THT Supercapacitors offer several advantages over other types of supercapacitors. They have higher energy storage capacities and can handle high-power pulses more effectively. Additionally, they operate over a wider temperature range and have lower ESR and leakage currents, which contribute to their longer cycle lifetimes. These characteristics make them particularly well-suited for demanding applications that require robust energy storage solutions.
Limitations
One of the primary limitations of THT Supercapacitors is their relatively large size, which is a necessity due to the through-hole mounting method. This can be a disadvantage in applications where space is limited. Additionally, while THT provides a strong mechanical connection, it has largely been replaced by surface mount technology (SMT) in many modern applications due to the latter's smaller size and lower manufacturing costs.
Considerations
When considering THT Supercapacitors, it is important to evaluate the initial costs, which may be higher due to their larger size and the complexity of through-hole mounting. Operating expenses are generally low due to their long cycle life and low maintenance requirements. However, their larger size may impact the overall design and space allocation on PCBs. Durability is a strong point, as the through-hole mounting provides a robust mechanical connection, but this must be balanced against the potential need for more space and higher initial costs compared to SMT alternatives.
