Next Generation SONET/SDH

Chapter 3.12 - Ethernet Over LAPS Legacy SONET/SDH

3.12   ETHERNET OVER LAPS OVER LEGACY SONET/SDH

LAPS was developed to be a low-cost transporting mechanism of Ethernet over
legacy SONET/SDH. The various functions from Ethernet to LAPS to SONET/
SDH are:

  • Receive MAC frame through MII or GMII and detect the Start Frame Delimiter
  • Synchronize to the SONET/SDH system clock
  • Add start flag (0x7E), SAPI, Control, and Address field to the LAPS frame
  • Generate Frame Check Sequence (FCS) generation over Address, Control,
SAPI, and LAPS information field (it does not include the Flag, Interframe
gap, Rate Adaptation sequence, and Abort sequence octets)
  • Transparency processing or octet stuffing within the LAPS frame
  • Add the rate-adaptation octet(s), if needed, within the LAPS frame by sending
    sequence(s) of {0x7D, 0xDD}
  • Add the end flag (0x7E) of LAPS frame
  • Fill in Interframe-gap (IFG) octet(s) (0x7E), if needed
  • Scramble all octets before sending to SONET/SDH payload

The format after encapsulating the MAC layer is illustrated in Figure 3.19.

Similarly, the various functions from SONET/SDH to LAPS to Ethernet are:

  • From the received SONET/SDH frame, descramble all octets before processing
  • Remove the Interframe-Gap fill octet(s) (0x7E), if any
  • Detect start flag (0x7E) of LAPS frame
  • Remove rate-adaptation octet(s) {0x7D, 0xDD} within the LAPS frame, if any
  • Detect transparency code sequences within the LAPS frame and replace
    {0x7D 0x5E} by 0x7E and {0x7D 0x5D} by 0x7D
  • Validate Address, Control, and SAPI fields
  • Calculate FCS and correct errors
  • Detect closing flag (0x7E)
  • Synchronize the MAC frame to MII receive clock
  • Add preamble and Start Frame Delimiter and send it to MAC through MII or
    GMII

MAC frames are passed over to LAPS through a Reconciliation sublayer and an

equivalent Media Independent Interface (MII) without address filtering (Figure
3.20). ITU-T Rec. X.85/Y.1321 recommends that only the full-duplex GbE be used
in GbE over LAPS over SDH. Figure 3.21 illustrates the protocol configuration of
Ethernet over LAPS over SONET/SDH.
