Next Generation SONET/SDH

Chapter 3.17 - ATM Over SONET/SDH

3.17  ATM OVER SONET/SDH

ATM traffic is transported over an ATM data network that consists of switching
nodes capable of switching ATM cells; of edge nodes that provide the policing
function, a function that verifies that the service level agreement is met by both the
client and the service provider; and flow control throughout the ATM network,
which locates traffic congestion areas and provides mechanisms to avoid them or
guarantee delivery of high-priority traffic. This is known as pure ATM.

ATM may also be transported over legacy SONET/SDH. There are two options
to accomplish this: embedded ATM and Hybrid ATM.

In Embedded ATM, cells are mapped in the SONET/SDH payload of a
STS/STM frame. In this case, ATM cells are completely transparent to the switching
network elements (NE). NEs require SONET/SDH traffic management only.

In Hybrid ATM, SDH/SONET (VT) traffic and ATM traffic are combined into
the same SONET/SDH bearer. However, network elements (NE), or nodes, have
the visibility of ATM cells. They separate the SONET/SDH traffic from the ATM
and they route each one to their respective switching fabric. After they have been
switched, they may be recombined into a hybrid payload. NEs require both
SONET/SDH and ATM traffic management.

ATM cells are mapped in concatenated STS-N (STS-Nc) payloads. For example,
in STS-3c, ATM cells are mapped in the payload capacity by aligning the byte
structure of every cell with the STS-3c byte structure. The entire payload capacity
(260 columns) is filled with cells, yielding a transfer ATM capacity of 149.760
Mbps (Figure 3.33). In STS-12c, ATM cells are mapped into the payload capacity
by aligning the byte structure of every cell with the STS-12c byte structure. The entire
payload capacity (1040 cols) is filled with cells, yielding a transfer capacity of

599.040 Mbps. If client cells are not available during the filling process, idle ATM
cells are used.
