Chapter 3: Initial Configuration

Introduction

Initial configuration of your Nokia appliance is relatively straightforward and can be accomplished in a very short period of time. Nokia designed its appliances so that if you power them on without an active configuration, they step you through a very simple, console-based menu of options designed to get you up and running with Voyager access in a matter of minutes. From there, the Web-based Voyager interface makes it simple for you to continue the configuration or import a saved configuration from a previous install.

In this chapter, we show you how to prepare for the initial configuration by setting up the required cabling and local network connections, then entering some basic information over a console connection such as hostname and IP address. You will then test your Voyager configuration interface in preparation for complete base router configuration in Chapter 4. Automatic configuration via DHCP is a new feature in IPSO 3.5 and 3.6; in this chapter, we discuss initial configuration using DHCP as well.

Preparing to Boot for the First Time

You need to configure your local workstation for serial and possibly Ethernet connectivity to your Nokia device. This means choosing the proper cabling for your network layout and knowing prior to configuration the following information:

  • The IP address of the workstation or laptop you will be using to connect to your Nokia appliance. This should be a nonroutable address. We use 192.168.1.2 for our example configuration.
