Practical Batch Process Management

Batch production management involves various activities like process control, unit supervision, process management, production planning and scheduling, production management, management of production information, recipe management, etc. To manage batch production successfully, it is important to ensure that all these activities and functions are planned systematically and implemented as per the planned schedule. The batch management system must also address issues related to safety system implementation.
As discussed above, batch production management involves many control activities and control functions. To manage batch production successfully it is important to ensure that all these control activities and functions are implemented successfully. The ISA S88 standard provides the control activity model as shown in Figure 10.1. It provides overall perspective on batch control and identifies major batch control activities and their inter-relationships. The control activity model is a functional model that helps in describing the functional requirements of a batch control succinctly. Though the standard does not design a solution nor does it provide implementation, it does help in the selection of a right batch control solution. Using the standard, the batch control functional requirements can be met by a solution implemented using any vendor application technology.
The control activities described in the control activity model are directly related to the real needs of batch manufacturing. Control activities from lower hierarchical level to the higher are briefly described as follows:
Process control: Process control, as a control activity, encompasses procedural and...
