A

ActiveX
A defined set of technologies developed by Microsoft based on object linking and embedding (OLE) and component object model (COM).
ActiveX control
ActiveX control is a standalone software component that performs a particular task in a predictable way. It can be used in many different applications, and the user will always know how to use it and how it is going to behave. ActiveX controls were formerly called OLE controls.
Alarm
Audio-visual signal that indicates an abnormal or out-of-limits condition.
Algorithm
A set of well-defined rules that specifies a sequence of operations for performing a specific task.
Allocation
A form of coordination control that assigns a resource to a batch or unit. An allocation can be for the entire resource or for part of a resource (S88).
Application
A software program written to perform a task on a computer.
Arbitration
A form of coordination control that determines how a resource should be allocated when there are more requests for the resource than can be accommodated at one time. Arbitration is typically required when a shared resource is requested by more than one batch or operators (S88).
Archiving
The process of moving historized data into a separate database than Historian database so that the portion can be managed independently, i.e. backing up onto an external medium, putting into offline state or back into online state.
Area
A component of a batch manufacturing site that is identified by physical, geographical or logical segmentation of equipment within the site. An...
