Principles of Space-Time Adaptive Processing

Chapter 12: Space-Time Processing for Bistatic Radar

Overview

All the previous considerations were related to the usual monostatic radar operation. In this chapter the impact of bistatic radar operation on the performance of air-/spaceborne MTI radar based on space-time adaptive processing is discussed. Bistatic radar makes covert observation possible which will play an increasing role in future reconnaissance systems (LE CHEVALIER [296]). Summaries of bistatic radar have been given by HANLE [199, 198], SKOLNIK [468, Chapter 25], and DUNSMORE in GALATI [142]. A bistatic SAR experiment has been described by MARTINSEK and GOLDSTEIN [339]. CHEN and BEARD [74] propose optimum flight paths for minimising the clutter Doppler spread. Space-TIME processing for suppression of jammers in a broadband bistatic radar configuration has been discussed by SEDYSHEV et al. [457]. Application of space-time adaptive processing to bistatic spaceborne geometries has been analysed by FANTE [118, 119] and KLEMM [267]. A bistatic experiment has been conducted using the MCARM array and a stationary balloon-borne transmitter (SANYAL et al. [447], BROWN et al. [60]).

Localisation of emitting sources (for instance, jammers) by use of out-of-plane multipath is in essence a passive bistatic localisation technique. COUTTS [84] estimates the target parameters range, heading, velocity, and altitude by evaluating attenuated, delayed, and Doppler shifted replicas of the emitter waveform. The technique has been verified successfully by using MOUNTAINTOP data (TITI [494]).

It has been shown in the previous chapters that monostatic STAP radar has the following properties:

  • For a horizontal flight path and a planar earth the curves of constant...
