While Mr. Ferguson may not have been speaking of IT services specifically, we found the above quote not to only be a very powerful statement but one that struck at the very heart of what we believe to be the essence of what IT should mean to your organization. Assuming this is the premise for what IT is all about and also assuming that as the responsible CFO, CIO or IT Director you have been confronted with the questions of "what do those IT people do" ? What value does the IT Organization provide? Let's not forget the granddaddy of them all why shouldn't we outsource the IT Organization?
In thinking about these questions, as people responsible for an IT Organization we can probably come up with several reasons why these questions continue to reoccur and never go away. Although the reasons we would identify might be valid, we propose that the main reason these question continue to confront IT Organization is because, whether perceived or not, the company sees no value from their IT Organization.
