Managing Microsoft's Remote Installation Services: A Practical Guide

Chapter 4: Client Installation

Highlights

This chapter is about the client installation procedure and provides a walk-through of the different options clients have when using RIS server images. Before an RIS installation can begin, there must be some understanding about the services and process flow that are involved in deploying RIS clients. Verifying the client installations, drivers, and checking for common errors will all be covered in this chapter.

Highlights:

  • Flow in RIS installations

  • Client installation

  • Verifying the client installation

  • Verifying the drivers

  • Common errors

4.1 Overview

Before going into the client installation, it is important to understand what is happening on the network and the different services involved; if there is an understanding of this process, then troubleshooting will be easier. The flow in RIS installations, from the client pressing F12 to the final installation of a brand-new Windows 2000 professional, Windows XP professional computer, or a new Windows 2002 server, will involve different kinds of services to interact with RIS and different packets on the network. Let's take a look at the flow in RIS installations, from the first boot to the final image working.

4.2 The Flow in RIS Installations

  1. The client presses F12 (Figure 4.1). The client presses F12 to start a PXE boot. This option must be enabled in the client basic input/output system (BIOS). Different vendors will have different options and interfaces in BIOS. If the client doesn't support PXE boot, then there is an option to use a boot disk, created by the RBFG tool. More...
