Managing Microsoft's Remote Installation Services: A Practical Guide

The intent of this chapter is to explain the fundamental technological terms that are used when discussing Remote Installation Services. It is important to have just a brief understanding about these terms before proceeding with other chapters. In some chapters we refer to certain terms or technologies, such as OCR, TFTP, SIF, and so forth. We do not want you to get lost in the midst of terminologies and grammatical shortcuts throughout this book, so read this chapter before reading anything else. Consider the content in this chapter a brief introduction to getting started with understanding Remote Installation Services.
Remote Installation Services is an additional server component that can be installed in Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 Server. No matter which of the two server platforms you run, Remote Installation Services can be added using the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, selecting Add/Remove Windows Component, and then selecting Remote Installation Services.
Remote Installation Services displays itself as a single server service in Windows Server 2003, and as a collection of services in Windows 2000 Server. In Windows Server 2003, the Remote Installation Services entry is apparent when you view the services component in Administrative Tools. In Windows 2000 Server, Remote Installation Services does not exist as a single service; instead, it is compromised of two services: Boot Information Negotiation Layer and Trivial File Transfer Protocol.
