Recipients, Mailboxes, and People
Users are the most important part of any system, and perhaps especially so in the case of systems that automate common office tasks and enable better human interaction. Without users there's simply no point to an electronic messaging server. In this chapter we'll look at the challenges involved in day to day operation of an Exchange server, covering topics like setting up and managing the user community, distribution lists and so on.
Anyone who has ever been faced with the task of managing a mail server knows that people have to be registered before they can use the system. Exchange server is no different in this respect. Users have to be registered and allocated space to hold their messages, but Exchange is a little different because a wide range of valid mail destinations, including people, are registered together in a single directory. Some or all of the recipient types are supported by other servers, but possibly not in as complete a fashion as Exchange. Valid recipient types are:
? Mailboxes . This is the most common type of recipient. Everyone who wants to use Exchange to send and receive interpersonal messages must be able to access a mailbox. Several users can share a mailbox, and it is possible for someone to delegate access to their mailbox to other users (see section on mailbox surrogacy later on in this chapter).
