Chapter 14: Acronyms
Overview
The language of electronic messaging technology is full of acronyms. This appendix describes many of the acronyms used in a Microsoft Exchange environment.
BDC
Backup domain controller. A Windows NT server allocated the task of acting as a backup to the Primary Domain Controller (PDC) in case a problem arises with the PDC.
CA
Certification Authority. The Key Management Server is the Exchange component which acts as a certification authority to control X.509 security certificates.
CAST
A proprietary encryption algorithm developed by Northern Telecom.
CCITT
In English, the International Consultative Committee on Telephony and Telegraphy, a body concerned with the formulation and definition of standards for electronic communications. The CCITT is a sub-delegation of the International Telegraph Union (ITU).
DDA
Domain Defined Attribute. A DDA can be encapsulated in an X.400 O/R address to allow routing to occur through an X.400 network to a gateway which takes the DDA and uses it to deliver the message to its final recipient. In such cases the DDA holds the recipient?s address in the format used by the mail system serviced by the gateway.
DES
Data Encryption Standard. An encryption algorithm developed by the US National Bureau of Standards.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Control Program.
DIB
X.500 Directory Information Base.
DIT
X.500 Directory Information Tree.
DMD
Directory Management Domain. The collection of DUAs and DSAs within an X500 directory. In an Exchange organization the DMD is represented by the set of directory services run in all sites.
