Manufacturing Surface Technology: Surface Integrity & Functional Performance

Chapter 6: Standards and Codes of Practice

6.1 Introduction

When surfaces are produced, they need to meet functional service requirements. To do this, constraints must be applied to the surfaces in terms of the allowable surface finish and sub-surface aspects, which together define the surface integrity (SI). At the design or specification stage, this should be done using engineering drawing standards and codes of practice because these are nationally and internationally defined, recognized and accepted. Unfortunately, there is no one standard, code of practice or technical memorandum that covers all the aspects of SI detailed above. Rather, there are a number of standards, codes and technical reports. The relevant ones will be described below but there are still areas that are not covered. Therefore, the reader must note that there are some aspects of SI that cannot be defined on engineering drawings. At the end of this chapter, there is a description of the gaps, problems and deficiencies of the standards and codes of practice. This should enable engineers involved in the specification of manufacturing processes to be aware of problems.

The ISO standards relevant to surfaces are not sequentially numbered because the ISO numbering system bears no relationship to any logical order. The reason for this is that standards are allocated numbers as and when they are needed and they are not reserved for surfaces or any other subject for that matter. The sequence used below follows a subject order, which is: surface 2D and 3D topography parameters, how the parameters are applied, defects and the...
