TABLE OF CONTENTS Most forms of security used in Acrobat are based on permissions. That is, a user is granted the right to open a document and make allowable modifications. Unlike other security options available in Acrobat, using password security can protect the contents of a file against changes anonymously. You can also control access to the document using a Document open password.
There are several approaches to applying security in Acrobat; the simplest method to add a simple password is through the Document Properties dialog box.
Follow these steps to apply password security to a document:
Choose File > Document Properties > Security to open the Document Properties dialog box.
Click the Security Method drop-down arrow and choose Password Security from the list (Figure 10.1). The Password Security Settings dialog box opens.
Choose a Compatibility option from the Compatibility drop-down list; a set of radio buttons become active (Figure 10.2).
Select encryption options based on the selected Compatibility version. Refer to Table 10.1 for available options.
Click Use a password to restrict printing and editing of the document and its security settings; the Permissions Password field becomes active; type a password in the Permissions Password field.
Click the Printing Allowed and Changes Allowed drop-down arrows and select options from the lists.
Click OK to close the dialog box. A message displays describing the effect of third-party security products; click OK to close the message.
