Aluminum belongs to the group IIIA of the periodic table. It is a white lustrous metal that loses its shine after long exposure to air. Aluminum is the third-most abundant element available on earth. This element forms 8.3% of the earth's crust. It is a constituent of clay, slate, and silicate rocks. Aluminum exists in a combined state. It is found in minerals, such as Corundum, Bauxite, Cryolite, and Aluminite.
Aluminum is malleable and ductile, and is good conductor of heat and electricity. It is a hard, light weight, and low cost metal. It is resistant to corrosion and a non-magnetic element.
The common uses of Aluminum are:
In cans and foils, which are used for packing products
In making household utensils
In making automobile bodies and airframes
For electrical transmission lines
In addition, Aluminum compounds, such as oxide and alumina, are used for making glass and refectories. Also, Aluminum powder is used to make silver paint.
