Materials for Advanced Energy Systems and Fission & Fusion Engineering: Proceedings of the Seventh China-Japan Symposium

Various actinide hydrides are under investigation for use as fission reactor fuel. Other than the TRIGA research reactor fuel, UZrH 1,6, which has been used for about forty years over the world, other types of actinide hydrides such as U-Th-Zr-H, Th-Zr-H, Pu-Th-H, Np-Zr-H,Am-Zr-H etc. are under study. The hydride fuel has advantages such as high hydrogen atom concentration, high inherent safety and high thermal conductivity. Property measurements, typically shown in [20] for thermal diffusivities as well as in-pile irradiation tests have proved promising characteristics of this type fuels [21]. The hydride fuel is especially interesting as effective MA annihilation target fuel and BWR fuel to increase burning performance and safety [22].
