3G Wireless Demystified

Chapter 5: Code Division Multiple Access 2000 (CDMA2000)

The code division multiple access 2000 (CDMA2000) system is a 3rd generation (3G) wireless specification that is based on the IS-95 industry specification developed in the United States. CDMA2000 radio transmission technology (RTT) combines new wideband (up to 15 MHz) digital spread spectrum CDMA channels with narrowband (1.25 MHz) IS-95 CDMA channels. The CDMA2000 specification is backward compatible with IS-95 as any type of CDMA channel can be used in 3G frequency or the standard cellular and PCS/PCN frequency bands.

CDMA systems differ from FDMA (analog) and TDMA systems through the use of coded radio channels. In a CDMA system, users can operate on the same radio channel simultaneously by using different coded sequences.

History

Spread spectrum radio technology has been used for many years in military applications. CDMA is a particular form of spread spectrum radio technology. In 1989 CDMA spread spectrum technology was presented to the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) in the United States as a proposal for the 2nd generation of mobile communications system. Unfortunately, it did not meet with immediate approval by the standards committee since it had just resolved a two-year debate between TDMA and FDMA and was not eager to consider another access technology. To prove the advantages of CDMA technology, CDMA cellular service began testing in the United States in San Diego, California, during 1991. As a result of continued persistence of CDMA proponents, in 1995, IS-95 CDMA commercial service began in Hong Kong, and a 1.9 -GHz all-digital system started service in...
