Batch Control Systems: Design, Application, and Implementation, 2nd Edition

This chapter covers the remaining parts of ANSI/ISA-88.01 Section 5, Batch Control Concepts. These are Production Plans and Schedules, Production Information, Allocation and Arbitration, Modes and States, and Exception Handling.
Business planning, based on the art of forecasting demand, provides a general strategy for the production mix of products. Other planning predicts the level of inventory of materials that the process will require. At the business level, schedules are detailed plans that allocate time and resources to the production of products, within the capabilities of the organization. Schedules may reveal that there is a lack of resources to implement the plans, which can cause plans to be made to acquire those resources.
Business planning and scheduling is not within the scope of this standard. See the SP95 work for details. 88.01 begins down at the process cell, although a lot of 95-level work has to be done to arrive at a schedule for a cell.
Basically, the batch schedule tells the cell what to make and how much and when to make it. Depending on the cell and unit control schemes, the schedule may have to specify the units to be used or the path to take. The same sort of thing is true for personnel, material options, and packaging requirements.
A process cell schedule is a list of products to be made, listed in the order in which they are to be made. Each listed product contains a set of information, which may contain...
