Batch Control Systems: Design, Application, and Implementation, 2nd Edition

This chapter continues and concludes the discussion of batch control activities and their functions that we began in Chapter 11. The control activities in this chapter are directly related to batch operations/manufacturing.
What follows focuses on one part of batch manufacturing, specifically the batch process cell. The control activities that contain business functions were described in the previous chapter. Recipe Management delivers a copy of a master recipe to Process Management on request. Production Planning and Scheduling delivers a schedule to Process Management when a new schedule is generated. Production Information Management collects information from the process activities and makes it available to both business and manufacturing. See Figure 11-1 for the relationships of activities. The following activities are covered in this chapter:
Process Management Coordinates the batch process functions of the process cell.
Unit Supervision Supervises unit functions and executes unit recipes.
Process Control Operates the equipment and control modules.
Personnel and Environmental Protection Provides separate control actions to keep bad things from happening.
This is the activity that controls batch production by translating the schedule information into commands and information that can be understood by the Unit Supervision activity. A copy of the master recipe specified by the schedule is obtained and converted to a control recipe. Equipment is selected and assigned to the scheduled batch. The batch is initiated at the specified time (or right away) in the first and succeeding units. Information from batch operation and equipment status...
