Batch Control Systems: Design, Application, and Implementation, 2nd Edition

This chapter will discuss the definitions listed in ANSI/ISA-88.01. They appear here after the models, concepts, and activities have been discussed because that is the way that SP88 did definitions. After trying definitions first a few times, SP88 decided to do them last, in order to improve productivity It was no good arguing about a definition when the concept that it defined had not reached consensus.
You will find that some of the definitions assume that you know the underlying concept. Sadly, this is what happens when the definitions are done just before publishing. Life is full of trade-offs.
The numbered definitions and their notes are from Section 3 in 88.01. The 88.01 words are enclosed in quotes. The next paragraph contains added references to sections of 88.01 that affect the definition, perhaps by describing another property of the thing being defined. The paragraphs following that contain commentary on the preceding definition.

Allocation also marks the allocated item as being in use, whether it is actually in use or will be used later.
