Blueprint Reading Basics: Manufacturing Print Reading, Third Edition

There are several ways that dimensions may be arranged or located on a print. Dimensions may be located according to need or according to one of several systems. Systems are generally used if the prints are going to be used with machine shop or production equipment that is electronically controlled. Following are description of Need, Base Line System, and Base Line System without Dimension Lines.
Dimensions that are arranged according to Need may originate from any surface or center line. Dimensions are arranged so the part can be made according to the need or function that is required. This method does not have a dimensioning system.
All dimensions in a Base Line System originate from base lines that are perpendicular to each other, Fig. 5-6. Base lines are surfaces or center lines that are easy to locate on the actual part. Base lines are identified and labeled X, Y, and Z.
A Base Line System Without Dimension Lines is similar to a Base Line System except dimension lines and arrow heads are not used. Dimensions are shown next to extension lines and originate from a base line, Fig. 5-7.
