Analysis and Design of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Chapter 4 - Polarization Properties of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

CHAPTER 4

Polarization Properties of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

The intrinsic optical anisotropies of VCSELs are investigated. A simple rate equation model (i.e., two-level model) is derived with the consideration of in-plane gain anisotropy to analyze the polarization dynamics of VCSELs. Furthermore, a four-level model, which takes into account the phase information of two orthogonal polarizations through saturable dispersion, is deduced to analyze the polarization stability and noise of VCSELs.
