Designing High-Speed Interconnect Circuits: Advanced Signal Integrity Methods for Engineers

Glossary

A-C

ABCD
A matrix that defines the voltage and current out of one port of a device, in terms of voltage and current into another, single, port.
adaptive equalization
In a serial receiver, the process of adjusting circuit parameters in a manner that reduces the impact of intersymbol interference or of crosstalk.
balun
A contraction of the phrase balanced-to-unbalanced converter. A balun is a three-ported device that can convert single-ended signals to differential, and differential signals to single ended.
boundary conditions
Values assigned at the edges of a field or the limits of an equation that allow you to solve for actual values rather than just relative relationships.
broadside
In the context of differential transmission lines, this is a coupling where the two lines are on adjacent layers and stacked one above the other.
c
As a lower-case letter, c is often used as the speed of light in free space, 3*10^8 meters per second.
cgs
Centimeter, gram, second.
chaining
A process in which the combined effect of two matrix operations can be found by the simple process of finding the product of the two matrices.
characteristic impedance
The relation between current and voltage for the forward-traveling wave in a device. It can also be viewed as the impedance that will terminate a transmission line in a manner that produces no reflections. It is usually designated by the symbol Zo.
circuit solver
A program such as SPICE that solves for currents, voltage, and time in a circuit...
