Chapter 2: Statistics
In the 60-question afternoon session of the FE Exam, expect nine questions on statistics, quality control, and design of experiments. In addition, statistics knowledge may be required for questions in other topics: simulation, queueing, safety stock in inventory control, regression to fit a learning curve, and work measurement.
Engineering Statistics
The mathematics chapter of the FE Reference Handbook contains a section on probability and statistics (pages 7 12) giving combination and permutation formulas, basic laws of probability, properties of the binomial distribution, properties of the normal distribution, a normal distribution table (page 10), a t distribution table (page 11), and a table of the F distribution for ? = 0.05 (page 12).
The Industrial Engineering chapter of the FE Discipline Specific Reference Handbook contains a table of density function formulas with mean and variance for the binomial, hypergeometric, Poisson, geometric, negative binomial, multinomial, uniform, gamma, exponential, and Weibull distributions (page 110). It also contains formulas for one-way analysis of variance (page 108).
Don't forget the statistics capabilities of your hand calculator. Make sure you know how to use it to determine sample means, sample standard deviations, linear regression parameters, and correlation coefficients.
