Engineering Physics: Fundamentals and Modern Applications

The universal activities are governed with the two types of basic, identities i.e., 'Matter' and 'Energy'. All the visible things are made up of matter, and energy is the invisible identity which causes physical activities. The two fundamental identities matter and energy can be interchangeable into each other's forms and can be quantified by the Einstein mass energy relation
Light is energy. It is an invisible universal identity which causes physical activities. Light also exhibits many optical phenomenon like reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, polarization, etc. All these phenomenon can be explained with the electromagnetic theory of light. But this wave theory of light fails to explain the photoelectric effect and Compton effect. These phenomenon could be explained by the quantum theory of light. According to Einstein, the energy of light is concentrated into small regions. This represents the smallest quantity of energy known as a photon. This photon is an energy particle. Hence light shows its wave nature on the one hand and particle nature on the other hand. This shows that light has both wave nature as well as particle nature. This nature of light is known as dual nature and the property is known as wave particle duality.
The particle nature of light is governed by the quantum theory. In the beginning of the 20th century, physicists accepted the dual nature of electromagnetic radiations with the acceptance of the quantum theory. Two decades later, in 1924, french physicist Louis de Broglie put forward the bold...
