Feng Shui: A Practical Guide for Architects and Designers

This chapter will discuss Feng Shui concepts with respect to certain architectural and design elements. In many instances, your reaction will, and should, be, "Of course, that is just good design." You will be correct. The problem occurs when these basic principles of environmental psychology are overlooked or given short shrift for the sake of locating the electrical and data outlets. Spaces are designed for people, and our goal is to use these universal principles that have evolved over the past 5,000 years to enhance their life and productivity through the following design elements:
Colors. The psychological effect of the use and balance of color
Shapes. The ramification of various shapes, including "missing" areas
Materials. The balancing of the elements through the use of materials
Lighting. The use of lighting to change the energy in a space
Sound. The many ways that sound can be used to affect the energy of a space
Signage. The design and placement of signage to enhance the flow of energy and image of a business
Art and Decorative Objects. The use of art and other decorative objects to guide the flow of energy and to balance a space
Plants and Landscaping. The ways in which plants and landscaping can affect our behavior and attitudes
Water Features. The placement of water features to enhance the environment
