The business of project management, which is required for any quality-oriented process, begins with fact-finding, proposing, and planning your project. Then you add the other elements of software engineering: analysis of the problem, designing a solution, coding, and finally testing it out. Figure 14.1 gives an overview of the documents and tools that make up a software development project with comprehensive quality management.
Figure 14.1: A large number of documents and tools may be required to satisfy the requirements of formal software development projects with comprehensive quality management. This is a road map.
Proposals and Quotes
Writing my first work proposal was awkward. What to say? How much to charge? The sample proposal included with LV9000 can help you get organized. Even if you already have significant experience quoting work, look over the Development Proposal Document and see if it gives you any more ideas. Or, if you?re a relative novice, feel free to plagiarize the text. What is important is content. Show that you understand the customer?s requirements by explaining them in your own words. Explain in general terms how you intend to solve the problem. Refer to standards or other documents, such as ISO, ANSI, or IEEE, where appropriate (but only if you actually intend to follow them!). Convince the customer that you are skilled in software engineering, system integration, LabVIEW development, and any other relevant areas. I usually attach a company profile or resume to address those issues.
