Metal Building Systems: Design and Specifications, Second Edition

This sample specification is included to help readers incorporate many items discussed throughout the book into their contract documents. It is roughly based on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Guide Specification for Military Construction Section 13121, with numerous changes and additions by the author. The specification is assumed to be a part of contract documents that include other specification sections and drawings with additional information.
This specification is intended to be used for custom-designed buildings; it might be too restrictive for smaller pre-engineered buildings that do not require exceptional durability of construction materials and finishes.
The specification covers a typical single-story metal building system with gable rigid-frame structure containing cranes. Delete any requirements not applicable to your building, and add the new ones if needed (add, for example, temperature loading when warranted). Some specific provisions that call for the specifier s attention are:
Section 1.2.2 requires the manufacturer to be AlSC-certified for category MB. Evaluate this requirement if reputable manufacturers who are not so certified are available in your area.
Section 1.2.3 calls for a manufacturer s representative to be present during construction. This requirement may or may not be needed, as discussed in Chap. 16.
Lateral drift provisions of Sec. 1.3.4 need to be specified. Refer to the discussion in Chap. 11.
Consider reducing the requirements for warranty and for metal-panel finishes if polyvinylidene fluoride coating is not desired.
