Appendix C: Op Amp Terminologies and Selected Data Sheets

In the following, we first define some basic terminologies and specifications used in op amp literature and then provide data sheets for a few typical op amps: the Fairchild ?A 741 and National LM 348.

C.1 OP AMP SPECIFICATIONS AND DEFINITIONS

All manufacturers do not, in general, specify the same parameters. However, a number of the parameters defined below are generally specified by most manufacturers. The definitions below will also provide some understanding of the terminologies used in op amp data sheets.

Input offset voltage The voltage V i that must be applied between the input terminals to make the output voltage zero (see Fig. C-1a). This quantity may be specified over a range of temperatures by the input offset voltage drift.

Output offset voltage The difference between the dc voltage present at the output terminals (or the output terminal and ground for the single-ended output) when the two input terminals are grounded (see Fig. C-1b).

Input offset current The difference between the separate currents in the input terminals, with the output at zero volts. (In Fig. C-1a, the input offset current is I - - I + when V 0 = 0.) The input offset current drift is the change in ( I - - I +) due to changes in temperature. This specification is usually provided by the manufacturer.
