Noise in Linear and Nonlinear Circuits

One of the great successes of recent years is the development of a workable theory of noise in nonlinear circuits, perhaps inappropriately called nonlinear noise theory. The goal of this theory is primarily to describe noise in frequency-conversion circuits, such as mixers and frequency multipliers, and phase noise in oscillators. The use of phase and phase-amplitude modulated digital communication systems has made the latter, in particular, increasingly important.
In this chapter we begin with a brief treatment of nonlinear circuit analysis, as it is necessary for an understanding of nonlinear noise analysis. We then treat modulated noise sources, and finally methods for analyzing noisy nonlinear circuits.
