Optical Rheometry of Complex Fluids

The following list of Jones and Mueller matrices has been compiled for most optical elements encountered in optical instruments where polarization effects must be taken into account. In writing these matrices, the following notation has been used:
?? = 2 ? n ?d/ ?; ??= 2 ?n ?d/ ?, where n = n ? ? in ? is the isotropic refractive index, d is the sample thickness;
?? = 2 ??n ?d/ ?: retardation of a sample, where ? n ? is the birefringence;
?? = 2 ??n ?d/ ?: extinction of a sample, where ? n ? is the dichroism;
?: the orientation of an optical element;
S ? = sin ?; c ? = cos ?; S ? = sinh ?; C ? = cosh ?;
I is the 2 2 unit matrix and I M is the 4 4 unit matrix.
