PBX Systems for IP Telephony

Chapter 14: PBX Networking

Overview

The features, functions, and architecture designs supporting calls across public or private network carrier facilities determine PBX networking capabilities. The two primary objectives of PBX networking features and functions are to minimize telecommunications service expenses and provide management and control over all off-net and on-net calls.

Off-premises calls placed over the PSTN or private network are managed and controlled by ARS. Synonyms for ARS include LCR, route optimization, and MERS. Calls placed to station users configured within a private network configuration may be routed on-net to premises-based station users dispersed across a single customer location or off-premises to locations classified by any of the following categories:

  1. Remote location with a single station user or a small station user group without local PBX common equipment

  2. Remote location with small, intermediate, or large station user group with local PBX common equipment cabinets/carriers

  3. Location with full function PBX system
