Portable Electronics Product Design and Development: for Cellular Phones, PDAs, Digital Cameras, Personal Electronics and More

The system design is a subset of the product development process but it represents most of the functions performed by the product designer. Figure 1.19 shows system design process steps from product concept through physical design, which result in the creation of manufacturing and procurement documentation.
The concept for a new portable electronic device may come from many different sources. The concept may be the brainchild of a single individual or it may be the combined output of a small team or large organization. The concept may be developed by someone with deep technical knowledge in the field of electronics, or it may be the idea of someone with no technical expertise whatsoever. A successful portable electronic product concept must be built on the fulfillment of a specific need in the context of a specific usage paradigm.
The development of a new product concept is a creative process and as such is more of an art than a science. Technical knowledge can play an important role in concept development but insight into human factors is even more valuable. In this respect, the study of anthropology may be as relevant to developing a product concept as the study of electronic engineering.
Producing a product concept is a highly creative activity and is often performed without the benefit of a well-defined process. There is no proven formula for systematically creating an innovative and successful product. That being said,...
