Wireless Communications Security

Chapter 5: Security in 2G Systems

Overview

With the advancement in technology, people wanted to communicate from anywhere, at anytime. A first generation analog system in mobile communication incorporates mobility in the system and is used for voice communication only. The second generation system moves to the digital era from the analog system, still being used for voice communication but also including some sort of data communications. When mobile communication came into being, security was not considered, but this was incorporated in the second generation systems.

Global system for mobile (GSM) communication provides true mobile communications with support for voice and data services and allows for worldwide connectivity and international mobility with unique subscriber address. CDPD was then developed to transfer digital data over the first generation analog standard AMPS in America. In Japan, I-mode is widely used for mobile communication. This is a higher layer standard running on top of PDC. In this chapter, the security issues, and the weaknesses of the security consideration of these systems, are discussed.

During the early 1980s, analog cellular telephone systems were experiencing particularly rapid growth in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, as well as in France and Germany. Each country developed its own system, each incompatible with everyone else's system in equipment and operation. This was an undesirable situation, because not only was the mobile equipment limited to operation within national boundaries in an increasingly unified Europe, but there was also a very limited market for each type of equipment, so economies of...
