I dont know if this helps but, I used to work in a drafting type of job and one of the plotters that we used was a Mutoh plotter . WE did all sorts of things including changing pens, driver , cable, and even on a different machine.

I had an experience as operator, repairman, ink re-filler with Encad Novajet, Mutoh , HP. HP,OCE,Cannon maybe Epson (IMHO) are pretty the same for budget oriented plotter . … intending to print complex bitmap patterns it would be preferable that vendor supplied the RIP driver software.
