Chapter 4 - Optical Fiber

4.1   INTRODUCTION

With the development of the field of fiber optics and its application to communication
systems, a revolution has taken place during the last 35 years or so. Indeed, using glass
fibers as the transmission medium and light waves as carrier waves, the terabit barrier
of sending information at a rate more than 1 terabit per second (which is roughly
equivalent to transmission of about 15 million simultaneous telephone conversations)
through one hair-thin optical fiber was crossed during the year 2001. This is certainly
one of the extremely important technological achievements of the twentieth century.
In this chapter we provide an introduction to propagation through optical fibers
and present some of its noncommunication applications. In subsequent chapters we
discuss various characteristics of optical fiber that are important for its application to
telecommunications and fiber optic sensors.

4.2   GRAHAM BELL’S EXPERIMENT

As discussed in Chapter 3, communication over long distances is achieved using the
principle of carrier wave communication. This can be achieved using either analog or
digital modulation of the carrier. Since optical beams have frequencies in the range
100 to 1000 THz, the use of such beams as the carrier would imply a tremendously
large increase in the information-transmission capacity of the system compared to
systems employing radio waves or microwaves; 1 tera hertz (THz) is 1 million
megahertz (a medium-wave radio broadcast has a frequency of about 1 MHz). It is
the large information-carrying capacity of a light beam that has generated interest
among communication engineers to develop a communication system using light
waves as carrier waves.
