Deploying Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 with Windows Terminal Server 2003 Terminal Services

Network management and resource monitoring is a vast topic that is open to many interpretations. Management and monitoring can include everything from server performance to network performance to end-to-end session analysis. This rather large topic of discussion should also include baselining. Baselining is the process of determining the normal operational ranges for the various components of your access infrastructure during a typical usage period. Due to the magnitude of this subject, we have elected to focus on the features that Citrix Presentation Server 3.0 brings to the table with regard to management and monitoring. While we will be discussing these Citrix-specific solutions, this is by no means meant to be the definitive list of management and monitoring toolsets available for Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services and Presentation Server 3.0.
In this chapter, we start by further discussing baselining and the impact it has on the monitoring and management of our access infrastructure. We then look at a series of management features in Presentation Server 3.0 Enterprise Edition. These features (Resource Manager, Network Manager, and the Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager 2000) are only available in Presentation Server Enterprise Edition. However, for those of you using Advanced or Standard, this section is still important for the baselining discussion. This chapter shows you some of the amazing benefits of Presentation Server 3.0 Enterprise Edition and may serve as a catalyst in moving your access infrastructure up to the top-of-the-line edition.
