1. A computing process that runs in the background, performing a specified operation at predefined times or in response to certain events. A UNIX term now used with other operating systems, from Greek mythology in which d mons were guardian spirits. 2. A program running on a system providing network services that listens for requests to use a particular service.
Dahlin's algorithm
A digital control algorithm in which the requirement of minimum response time used in the deadbeat algorithm is relaxed in order to reduce ringing in the system response. Widely used for paper machine control.
DAIS
Database Access Integration Services; profile for uniform access to computer data.

1. A serial interconnection of devices. Signals are passed from one device to another, generally in the order of high priority to low priority. 2. A method for propagating signals along a bus, often used in applications in which devices are connected in series.
