Chapter U: U: UART UV Erasable PROM (EPROM)

UART: Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter. A MOS/LSI device that is a complete subsystem. It simultaneously transmits and receives asynchronous data in duplex or halfduplex operation.
U bolt: A rod that is threaded at both ends and bent into a U shape. In its most common form, a bar is placed across the span of the U to provide a clamping force around a tubular or cylindrical object.
UDP: User Datagram Protocol. A TCP/IP transaction protocol that is used for applications such as remote network management and name service access. It allows users to assign a name to a physical or numbered address.
ultimate analysis: See analysis, ultimate.
ultimate cycle method: Sometimes called the "ultimate period method."

ultrasonic: Using frequencies that are above the audio-frequency range, that is, above 20 kHz. [ISA-37.1 1975 (R1982)]
ultrasonically assisted machining: A machining method in which ultrasonic vibrations are imparted to a tool to make it cut with better quality or speed than would the same machining process without the vibrating tool.
ultrasonic atomizer: A type of atomizer that produces uniform droplets at low feed rates by flowing liquid over a surface that is vibrating at ultrasonic frequency.
ultrasonic bonding: A method for joining two solid materials. A joint under moderate clamping pressure is subjected to vibratory shearing action at ultrasonic frequencies until a permanent bond is achieved. Ultrasonic bonding may be used on both soft metals and thermoplastics.
