wafer
1. A thin disk of a solid substance. 2. A thin part or component, such as a filter element.
wafer body
A thin, annular-section butterfly body whose end surfaces are located and clamped between the piping flanges by bolts that extend from flange to flange. [ANSI/ISA-75.05.01 2000]
wafer-type temperature detector
A type of element for a resistance thermometer that is designed with fine insulated wire made of copper, nickel, or platinum. The wire is sandwiched between protective sheets of insulating material inside a sealed, wafer-type enclosure. These detectors combine small mass with good thermal contact to give fast response times.
WAIS
Wide Area Information Servers (pronounced "wayz"). Sophisticated search indexes that can find information based on subjects or descriptions rather than just keywords. They are helpful in accessing whole groups of documents related to the topic being researched.
waist
The center portion of a vessel, tank, or container that is smaller in cross section than adjacent sections.
