Preventive Maintenance

Once the tasks have been properly developed and the schedule determined, the next step is the actual performance of the tasks. In Chapter 5, the topic of developing detailed preventive maintenance activities was covered. If the preventive maintenance tasks have been developed using these guidelines, the work execution should be a matter of the technicians following the directions on the check sheets.
If the guidelines have been followed, the maintenance technicians will be provided detailed instructions for the task being performed, the spare parts that are required, and any special tools, regulatory instructions, etc. It will simply be a matter of executing the assigned tasks.
If the task is assigned to an apprentice technician or to an operator, it may be necessary to observe them performing the preventive maintenance activity to insure that it is properly executed. Once their ability to perform the preventive maintenance task is validated, they should be able to complete it independent of an observer.
Although the preventive maintenance task has the job classification already assigned, it is up to the immediate supervisor to determine which employee will actually perform the work activity. What factors are used to determine which employee will be assigned to perform the preventive maintenance task? The first is the complexity of the task. Is this task something that is detailed enough that any employee can perform it independent of any supervision? If so, then it is only a matter of the supervisor assigning the individual employee.
