Preventive Maintenance

This step will develop specific types of services that are required for each component, including all the techniques that apply to the components that were described in the previous section. These general descriptions of the services could serve as titles to the checklists and procedures that will be developed in the next step.
The information for the general lists of services that must be performed on each equipment item can be found in four basic areas listed in Figure 4-1.
Sources of Preventive Maintenance Information
Manufacturers
Maintenance Engineers
Operators, Craft Technicians, Supervisors
Regulatory Agencies
All four should be used and the results compared to insure full coverage for the equipment components. Each area has its strengths and weaknesses. The manufacturers will tend to over-maintain the components. The maintenance engineers use the past to predict the future. Any changes in equipment design, operating levels, or maintenance tools and techniques can alter the component's maintenance needs. Operators, craft technicians, and supervisors all tend to rely on their memories and can forget or overlook items. If all three are combined, the correct maintenance services can be listed.
When equipment is manufactured, the maintenance requirements should be specified by the manufacturer. In these cases, the maintenance requirements are determined by the design of the equipment. Because the equipment is designed and produced by the manufacturer, it is only reasonable that the equipment manufacturer should specify the maintenance requirements.
