Inspection 11: A Typical Lighting Circuit

Refer to Figure B-11 for this section.

Circuit Breaker

Item 1 is the circuit breaker that supplies power to the circuit. The main inspection point of this component is the tightness of all connections. Tight connections prevent most problems. If the breaker begins tripping frequently, it's usually a sign of wear in the breaker. If there is no problem in the circuit, consideration may be given to rebuilding or replacing the breaker.

On-Off Switch

Item 2 is the on-off switch for the lights. The main inspection point here is the correct connection and protection of the wiring. If the wires are connected and tightened correctly, most problems will be minimal. The wiring should be in conduit or some form of flexible covering to prevent damage to the wires. If they're not protected, any small breakdown in insulation will cause a lighting failure.

Relay Panel

Item 3 is the relay panel. This item is optional, although it is found in heavier industrial lighting. The relay panel should be given the same basic inspection as the relay panel in the previous example. Almost all components will be similar.

Ballast

Item 4 is a ballast of the transformer. This device is used to change the line voltage to the correct level for the light. Proper connection of the wiring and tightness of all fittings is the primary inspection.
