Description
Disc (Circular) Laboratory Filters are pre-cut filters designed to be integrated into reusable filter holders. These filters are typically economical and are used to separate particles from liquids or gases in laboratory settings. They are available in various diameters and are often made from materials such as stainless steel, glass, or polymers.
Working Principle
Disc filters operate by allowing a liquid or gas to pass through a porous membrane, which traps particles and contaminants. The filter is mounted on a hollow shaft and rotates slowly in a feed trough, where it picks up solids. The trapped solids can later be scraped off before the disc re-enters the feed trough. This process is efficient for separating solids from liquids, making disc filters useful for various laboratory applications.
Applications
Disc filters are used in a wide range of laboratory applications. They are particularly effective in microbiological analysis, protein and enzyme filtration, and chemical filtration. For instance, they can be used to filter large volumes of relatively clean water quickly, as a 45 mm disc can process 1 liter of water in approximately 20 minutes. They are also used in microscopy for generating spectral images and in quality applications such as food safety inspections.
Advantages over other Laboratory Filters
Disc filters offer several advantages over other types of laboratory filters. Their design allows for higher flow rates and faster extractions compared to cartridge filters. The small length-to-diameter ratio of the disc enables efficient filtration, making them suitable for processing large volumes of samples quickly.
