Insertion Type Mass Flow Switches

Description

Insertion type mass flow switches are devices designed to measure the flow or quantity of a moving liquid or gas in terms of mass per unit time. These switches are typically inserted perpendicular to the flow path and are used to monitor and control the flow of fluids by providing an electrical output or local display that indicates the flow rate.

Working Principle

Insertion type mass flow switches operate by measuring the mass flow rate of a fluid, often using thermal dispersion technology. In this method, a heated velocity sensor and a temperature sensor are used. The electronics of the device maintain a constant temperature differential between the actual fluid temperature and the heated sensor. As the fluid flows past the heated sensor, it cools the sensor, and the power required to maintain the temperature differential is directly proportional to the mass flow rate. This principle allows for accurate measurement of the flow rate, making these switches useful for monitoring and controlling fluid flow in various industrial applications.

Applications

Insertion type mass flow switches are used in a variety of industrial applications. For example, they are employed in refinery water and wastewater control systems to monitor and manage the flow of fluids through large diameter pipes. They are also used in oil and gas refineries for water treatment processes, where accurate flow measurement is critical for efficient operation.

Limitations

One limitation of insertion type mass flow switches is that they require a threaded hole or other means of access to be inserted into the process pipe. This can complicate installation in certain systems, especially those with smaller diameter pipes. Additionally, the accuracy of these devices can be affected by the thermal properties of the fluid being measured, which may require calibration for different types of fluids.

Considerations

When selecting insertion type mass flow switches, several factors should be considered. Initial costs can vary depending on the complexity and specifications of the device. Operating expenses may include the cost of calibration and maintenance, which can differ based on the flow technology used. Durability and accuracy are important considerations, as these factors will impact the reliability and performance of the switch over time. Replacement and maintenance costs should also be evaluated to determine the total lifecycle cost and ensure the lowest cost of ownership.
