The edges seal fine the trick is to cut the barrel with a Jig saw with a nice fine metal blade dont get in a hurry take your time. make the top cut only and weld or screw in your hinges .

Shim, etc. underneath the welded bases, to get 'straight' readings both ways. .... On small hinges , I also have used a line-up rod, thru the barrels , but still check .
